Quick answer: cleaning is not the same as disinfecting. First remove organic matter (dry clean, then wash with detergent), rinse, apply the disinfectant for the contact time stated by the manufacturer, and finally dry and ventilate before the animals return. Record every clean.
Protocol stages
- Move the animals out of the area, if possible.
- Dry clean: remove faeces, soiled bedding and debris.
- Wash with water and detergent.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Disinfect with an approved product, following the dose and contact time.
- Dry and ventilate before bringing the animals back.
Suggested frequency
| Area | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Food and water bowls | Daily |
| Kennels, cages and beds | Daily (cleaning) / per protocol (disinfection) |
| Shared areas | Weekly or as needed |
| New animal moving into an enclosure | Full cleaning and disinfection |
