Quick answer: biosecurity aims to stop diseases getting in or spreading. The basics: control access for people and vehicles, quarantine new animals, use dedicated equipment per area, carry out regular cleaning and disinfection, control pests and log visitors.
Basic measures
- Access: separate clean and dirty areas; footbaths or overshoes at the entrance.
- Visitors: log of people and vehicles.
- New animals: quarantine and a vet check before mixing them with others.
- Equipment: dedicated brushes, buckets and tools per area or group.
- Cleaning: a documented protocol.
- Pests: control of rodents, flies and wild birds.
- Training: the whole team must know the protocol.
At equestrian centres
- One grooming kit per horse.
- Individual buckets and drinkers.
- Isolate horses arriving from competitions or other yards, as advised by your vet.
