Quick answer: group your inventory into food, hygiene, basic veterinary supplies and equipment. Count your fastest-moving items weekly and everything else monthly, apply ‘first expired, first out’ and assign one person to be responsible.

Inventory categories

  • Food: dry food by life stage (puppies, adults, pregnant females), wet food, milk replacer.
  • Hygiene: puppy pads, litter, disinfectants, bags.
  • Grooming: shampoos, brushes, nail clippers.
  • Equipment: food and water bowls, beds, carriers.

Stock-control routine

  1. Weekly count of dry food and puppy pads.
  2. Monthly expiry-date check.
  3. A fixed, labelled location for each product.
  4. Log of stock in and out on a shared sheet.
