On 13 April 2026, the European Commission Representation in Spain published a clarification on the changes to travelling with pets. The supplementary rules apply from 22 April. Its explanation stresses that the system continues, with technical adjustments.
The clarification on existing documents
The official note explains that animals already identified under the rules and correctly issued passports remain compliant during the transition. So no news item should be read as a general obligation to replace documents. Read the full information if you have questions about your case.
Plan your specific trip
Note down the species, countries and means of transport. Check the requirements for your destination and return on the official pages of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA). Take this information to your vet to clarify what needs doing, and don't finalise your plans based on an old screenshot.
Check your travel equipment
Measure your pet and check the carrier model, fastenings and maximum weight. Ask the airline or transport company whether it accepts that model and under what conditions. The right equipment makes the journey easier, but it does not replace health and documentation requirements.
A common question
Do I automatically need to replace the pet passport because of the changes?
The clarification provides for continuity for correctly issued documents. Confirm your specific situation with your vet and the official source.
General guidance. Check the current conditions and requirements for your specific case with the relevant body or authority.
