Quick answer: Spain’s dog and cat food market was worth around €2.178 billion in 2025 (+6.1%), driven above all by cats: cat food grew by 12.2%, compared with 1.1% for dog food. At home, average spending is around €163 a month per dog and €144 per cat, according to AEDPAC’s latest barometer.
On 15 October 2026, IFEMA Madrid published a sector overview bringing together the latest market reports: ANFAAC figures on pet food, AEDPAC’s owner habits barometer, FEDIAF’s European report and DBK’s study of veterinary clinics. These are the trends they reveal and what they mean for anyone living with a dog or a cat.
Cats are pulling the pet food market
According to ANFAAC’s 2025 data (its member companies account for around 90% of the sector), dog and cat food reached 603,527 tonnes (+5.3%) and €2.178 billion. Cat food reached €1.039 billion (+12.2%) and dog food €1.139 billion (+1.1%). For cats, wet food (+17.3% in value) and treats (+26.7%) stand out, while dry dog food fell by 2.1%.
Across Europe, FEDIAF’s Facts & Figures 2026 report, published in June, counts around 306 million pets and 140 million households with at least one (49%), with a pet food market worth around €29.4 billion.

How much owners in Spain spend
AEDPAC’s 3rd Pet Parents Barometer, presented at Iberzoo Propet 2026, estimates average spending at €163 a month per dog (€1,956 a year) and €144 a month per cat (€1,728 a year). Food is the biggest item: 38.8% of the monthly budget, around €58 on average. For dogs, vet care, insurance and grooming follow; for cats, insurance, vet check-ups and toys and accessories.
Owners value quality most (8.6 out of 10), followed by taste (8.2) and vet recommendation (8.1). Manufacturer brands make up 65.9% of purchases, and 52.7% of owners combine several brands, up from 48.9% the year before.
In store, online and at the vet
84.9% of owners buy both in store and online, although they spend more in store; only 1% buy all their pet food online. Supermarkets and hypermarkets account for 50.7% of in-store purchases and specialist chains for 27.6%. Veterinary clinics, meanwhile, turned over €2.09 billion in 2025 (+6.7%) across 11,256 practices, according to DBK.
What it means for you: tips for spending wisely
- Compare by the kilo or by portion, not by pack: it is the most reliable way to see what really works out cheaper.
- If your cat eats wet food, check the label to see whether it is complete or complementary.
- Ration treats: sales are rising, but they should only be a small part of the daily diet.
- When changing food, do it gradually and ask your vet if your pet has a health condition.
